2021/22 Xinjiang cotton quality analysis (by Feb, 2022)

By Feb 28, ginning volumes of 2021/22 Xinjiang cotton totaled 5.2764 million tons, and the inspection volumes of Xinjiang cotton amounted to 5.1653 million tons. The arrivals of 2021/22 cotton are approaching the end, and the indicators of cotton tend to be stable. This article shows the yearly change of quality indicators of Xinjiang cotton for a last time.

 

1. Color index

After Nov and Dec, the proportion of cotton quality indicators tended to stabilize and had no big change. In terms of the color index, the proportion of white, grade-2 cotton increased slightly in Jan-Feb, 2022, but for the whole crop year, the proportion of white, grade-2 cotton and above reduced by 5.8 percentage point from the same period of last year, and the volumes reduced by 340kt. Nevertheless, the proportion of white, grade-3 cotton and above increased by 0.8 percentage point year on year, while the volumes reduced by 200kt. By end Feb, the cotton met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (white, grade-3 and above) reached 4.465 million tons, with a proportion of 86.4%, up 0.67 percentage point year on year.

For length, by end Feb, 2022, the cotton that met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (length at 28mm and above) was 4.98 million tons, with a proportion of 96.4%, up 17.2 percentage point year on year. In 2021/22 season, volumes of cotton with length at 29mm and above were 3.39 million tons, taking a share of 65.6% in total production, up 42.8 percentage point from last year, and volumes rose by 2.10 million tons.

By end Feb, viewed from strength, the cotton that met the demand of Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (S3 and above) was 5.04 million tons, with a proportion of 97.6%, up 1.6 percentage point year on year. In 2021/22 season, volumes of cotton with strength at 29gpt and above were 2.26 million tons, taking a share of 43.8% in total production, up 24.7 percentage point from last year, and volumes rose by 1.18 million tons.

For length uniformity, by end Feb, 2022, the cotton that met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (U3 and above) was 5.09 million tons, with a proportion of 98.6%, up 0.83 percentage point year on year.

For micronaire, by end Feb, 2022, the cotton that met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (Micronaire A+B) was 4.457 million tons, with a proportion of 86.3%, up 18.6percentage point year on year.

For ginning quality, it has no big change from previous season, and the cotton that met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange reached 99.5%.

 

Conclusion

Overall, the 2021/22 cotton quality improves apparently in terms of length, strength and micronaire. By end Feb, the cotton that met the demand for Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange on all indicators reaches 4.46 million tons, taking a share of 86.3%, up 18.6 percentage point year on year, and volumes increase by 770kt (excluding the trash content). By end Feb, the volumes of cotton with length at 29mm and strength at 29gpt are 2.26 million tons, with a proportion of 43.8%, up 24.7 percentage point year on year, and volumes rise by 1.18 million tons year on year.
