Vietnamese textile and apparel export in Apr higher than the Q1 average

In Apr 2022, Vietnamese cotton import dropped by 44.7% year-on-year and 20.6% month-on-month. Vietnamese yarn imports and exports dropped by 19% and 10.7% year-on-year, and down 16.9% and 11% month-on-month, respectively. Vietnamese fabrics imports increased 2.9% year-on-year and 15.1% month-on-month. Vietnamese textiles and apparel exports moved up by 26.8% year-on-year and 3.3% month-on-month.

 

1. Vietnamese cotton import moved down in Apr both year-on-year and month-on-month

Vietnamese cotton imports in Apr reached 97,000tons, down 44.7% over the same period last year and 20.6% from the previous month. U.S. was the main source of Vietnam's cotton imports, with 42,491 tons of imports, accounting for 43.8% of the total imports, followed by Brazil and India, accounting for 30.6% and 7.3%, respectively.

In Apr, Vietnam imported 84,000tons of yarns, down 19% year-on-year and 16.9% month-on-month respectively. By country, its yarn imports in Apr were mostly originated from China, China Taiwan and Korea. Of this total, 49,641tons of yarns were from China, 13,434tons from Taiwan, and 5,696tons from Indonesia, accounting for 59.4%, 16.1% and 6.8% respectively.

 

3. Vietnamese yarn export moved down year-on-year and month-on-month in Apr

Vietnamese yarn exports reached 146,200tons, down 10.7% over the same period last year and 11% from the previous month. By country, the exports to China, the United States and South Korea were 73,122tons, 15,089tons, and 10,576tons, accounting for 50%, 10.3% and 7.2% respectively.

Vietnamese yarn net exports reached 62,600tons, up 3.4% year-on-year but down 1.6% month-on-month respectively.

Vietnamese fabrics imports in Apr were 1.452 billion USD, an increase of 2.9% over the same period last year and 15.1% month-on-month. By country, its fabrics imports in Apr were mostly originated from China, China Taiwan, and South Korea, of which 950 million USD worth of fabrics were from China, 170 million USD worth of fabrics from China Taiwan and 160 million USD worth of fabrics from South Korea.

 

6. Vietnamese textiles and apparel exports value improved both year-on-year and month-on-month in Apr

Vietnamese textiles and apparel exports in Apr reached 3.152billion USD, up 26.8% year-on-year and 3.3% month-on-month respectively. By country, Vietnam exported 1,610million USD worth of textiles and apparel to US, 280million USD to Japan, and 250million USD to South Korea, accounting for 51%, 8.8% and 7.9% respectively.

 

In conclusion, Vietnamese fabric and textile and apparel exports moved up both year-on-year and month-on-month. The export value of Vietnamese textile and apparel exceeded the average level in the first quarter and continued to maintain a good momentum. On the one hand, it was because Vietnamese government relaxed epidemic prevention restrictions and opened the mode of "coexistence with new crown". On the other hand, the United States has imposed sanctions on Xinjiang cotton. Since March 2022, there have been outbreaks of the COVID-19 epidemic in China, causing worries in the international market about China's production and supply and increasing the risk of the transfer of orders to Southeast Asia and India.
