2022/23 Xinjiang cotton quality analysis (by Oct, 2022)

By Nov 7, 2022, ginning volumes of Xinjiang cotton totaled 1.2243 million tons, a fall of 38% year on year, and inspection volumes of Xinjiang cotton were 311kt, down 80% year on year. Under the impact of epidemic in Xinjiang, 2022/23 cotton ginning and inspection speed is slow, and currently, the daily inspection volumes are less than 20kt. By end Oct, the inspection volumes of Xinjiang cotton was about 200kt, taking a share of less than 4% of total Xinjiang cotton production, down 930kt from the same period of last year. Therefore, the quality analysis in Oct can only have a preliminary understanding on new cotton quality, and the actual quality situation shall be waited till Nov and Dec.

According to the data till end Oct, the proportion of white, grade-3 cotton and above in total 2022/23 Xinjiang cotton reached 83.1%, up 2.67 percentage point from the same period of last year, but the proportion of white, grade-2 cotton and above was 9.1%, down 0.5 percentage point from last year.

By end Oct, the proportion of cotton with length at 28mm and above reached 91%, down 6.3 percentage point from last year, but up 16 percentage point from the same period of 2020/21 season. Proportion of cotton with length at 29mm and above was 48.3%, down 21.3 percentage point from last year, but up 26.1 percentage point from 2020/21 season.

Due to the set of indictors, the strength of 26gpt and 27gpt cannot be figured out in S3 (26.0-28.9gpt). By end Oct, cotton that can meet the demand of Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange on strength reached 99.2%, down 0.1 percentage point from last year. By end Oct, the proportion of cotton with strength at 29gpt and above was 43.63%, down 10.5 percentage point from last year, but up 21.93 percentage point from 2020/21 season.

By end Oct, proportion of cotton that can meet the demand of Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange approached 99.9%, up 0.5 percentage point from last year.

Conclusion

New cotton inspection speed is slow impacted by the epidemic, which cannot be analyzed well on the cotton quality from the volumes, and the quality is mainly analyzed from the proportion. In general, color index is better than last year, while length and strength index reduces, but far better than 2020/21 season. Other indicators change little. But the inspection volumes are small in Oct, and pay attention to the indicators in Nov and Dec.
