The world's largest 900kt/year BDO project settled in Fujian

On May 24, 2023, the signing ceremony of the world biggest 900kt/year BDO technology introduction of Zhongjing Petrochemical hydrogen energy utilization and carbon-four industry chain from Johnson Matthey was held in Fuzhou. This marks the investment of Zhongjing Petrochemical of 18 billion yuan to build a carbon-four new material industrial chain, accelerating the move towards high-end chemical industry.

Zhongjing Petrochemical is the world's largest biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) production company, having completed an investment of 28 billion yuan, with a complete carbon-three full industry chain of "liquid chemical wharf→low-temperature storage tank area→propane→propylene→polypropylene→BOPP", entering China's top 500 enterprises in 2022.

The carbon-four new material industrial chain project uses the hydrogen gas produced by propane dehydrogenation to produce propylene. Its byproduct, BDO (1,4-butanediol), can be used to produce lithium batteries, high-end fabric spandex, fully biodegradable plastics, and so on. The total investment is 18 billion yuan and an annual output value of over 60 billion yuan. The project will be constructed in three phases and is expected to be fully put into operation within three years.

"The carbon-four industrial chain reduces the cost of the carbon-three industrial chain by about 2.5 billion yuan per year, and has significant economic and social benefits," said Weng Shengjin, Chairman of the Board of Zhongjing Petrochemical. At present, 135,000 tons of hydrogen gas are produced annually in the propane dehydrogenation process, primarily used as fuel, but its value doubles when used as an industrial raw material. To build a carbon-four industrial chain, the hydrogen gas consumed by the carbon-three industrial chain through the use of the phthalic anhydride hydrogenation device and the significant reaction heat generated by the butane oxidation to produce phthalic anhydride are perfectly utilized to solve the problems of hydrogen and steam supply and the utilization of reaction heat energy.

It is reported that the core patent technology of the project, the production of BDO with phthalic anhydride technology, uses the advanced process technology of Johnson Matthey from UK. Su Liyun, president of Johnson Matthey in China, stated that China is efficient and market-oriented while Britain is creative and technical, and the two companies have joined forces, applying cutting-edge scientific technology to achieve a significant breakthrough in BDO device design and capacity after more than two years of effort.
