Styrene spot prices rally amid supply constraints and cost pressures
The Styrene Monomer (SM) market has recently experienced a sharp upward rally. The surge was primarily driven by rising raw material costs and a domestic supply squeeze, though cautious downstream demand threatens to cap future gains.
The cost catalyst:
Robust global crude oil and rising Pure Benzene (BZ) prices provided an unshakeable cost foundation. This firm upstream support forced SM prices higher, even as producers operated with negative cash flows.
The supply squeeze:
Domestic operating rates fell to 63.55% due to major plant overhauls, most notably Shandong Lihuayi's 40-day shutdown. Simultaneously, strong exports to South Korea and India rapidly drained port inventories from 74,800 down to 55,300 tons week-over-week, sparking a localized shortage of circulating spot cargo.
The demand dilemma:
The rapid price ascent is severely compressing profit margins for downstream EPS, PS, and ABS manufacturers. This margin destruction has triggered strong high-price resistance, with factories limiting procurement strictly to rigid, immediate needs.
Short-term outlook:
The market will likely maintain a volatile, upward trajectory in the near term. However, sustained growth depends heavily on whether downstream sectors can successfully pass these costs onto end-users, or if they will be forced to cut production.
