Bangladesh still India’s first largest export market of cotton yarn

Cotton yarn (HS code: 5205) exports of India amounted to 101.1kt in May, according to the latest data, up 75.71% on the year and 13.34% on the month. Bangladesh became the largest export destination. The exports to China totaled 21.8kt, up 16.95% on the year and 12.95% on the month.

China still took the second place among the export market of Indian cotton yarn in May with a share of 22%, down 11% point compared with Apr. Bangladesh shared 37%, ranking the first. Similar to Apr, except Bangladesh and Portugal, the shares of other countries all declined or just stayed flat.

In terms of the year-on-year change, Indian cotton yarn exports to China inched up. Except Turkey, the top ten export markets all saw positive growth from May 2020, with Peru having the highest increase of 587.9%. In terms of month-on-month change, most markets increased. As two largest export markets of Indian cotton yarn, Bangladesh kept the first and China also won a growth of 12.73%.

Among major products of Indian cotton yarn exported to China, only uncombed 8-25S/1 saw increase in y-o-y growth in May. In terms of month-on-month change, uncombed 8-25S/1 (HS: 520512) and combed 30-47S/1 (HS: 520524) increased 13.3% and 23.1%, while combed 8-25S/1 (HS: 520522) and combed 25-30S/1 (HS: 520523) moved down 36.38% and 34.09%. The exports of uncombed 8-25S/1 from India to China reached 10,071mt, accounting for 46.3% of the total, and up 124.87% on the year; combed 8-25S/1 and combed 25-30S/1 took up 11.3% and 10.5% respectively and moved down 9.1% and 55.4% on the year; the exports of combed 30-47S/1 declined the most by 57.1% on the year with export volume of 2042mt.

In conclusion, May cotton yarn exports of India achieved growth both on the month and year with Bangladesh, China and Portugal as the major destination. The major products exported to China also increased on the year, with uncombed 8-25S/1 taking up the most of the total exports.
