China, Turkey, Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam served as the dominant EU textile and apparel imports sourcing bases.

Shares of the imports from Turkey, China, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam accounted for more than 70%. In Jan-Jul, imports of the above markets were 5.03 million tons, up 18.5% year-on-year and 1.7% over the same period in 2019. The imports in Jul were 732,000 tons, up 5.7% year-on-year and 5.7% month-on-month, but down 9.2% over the same period in 2019. It showed that although EU-27 textile and apparel imports performed well in Jan-Jul and imports volume have recovered to pre-Covid level, the import performed poor in July, significantly lower than pre-Covid level. So which of the major markets perform better in July?

Imports from Bangladesh, China and Indonesia fell sharply in July compared with the same period in 2019, while those from Vietnam declined slightly, and the imports from India, Pakistan and Turkey showed growth, especially the Pakistan. From the month-on-month growth, the imports Indonesia, Vietnam and Turkey declined, while other markets increased to varying degrees.

Overall, EU-27 textile and apparel imports had little change in July compared with the previous month. The shipping problem has affected import and export trade all the time since last year, and coupled with a resurgence of COVID-19, the pace of import and export trade in different markets was different this year, and the epidemic has led to a shift in some textile and apparel orders which shifted to the markets that were well controlled and had convenient transportation.
