BASF launches new HMD plant in France

BASF has officially commenced operations at its newly constructed world-scale hexamethylenediamine (HMD) plant in Chalampé, France. Construction of the facility began in 2022, and its completion marks a major milestone in the company's strategic expansion of its polyamide 6.6 (PA 6.6) business in Europe. With this addition, BASF's global HMD production capacity rises to 260,000 metric tons annually.

The Chalampéfacility plays a key role in BASF's long-term regional strategy. Dr. Stephan Kothrade, member of BASF's Board of Executive Directors, emphasized, "This investment demonstrates BASF's commitment to sustaining chemical manufacturing in Europe and advancing regional development. It's a concrete example of our 'Winning Ways' strategy aimed at delivering long-term value and maintaining competitiveness amid economic uncertainty."

The HMD plant complements BASF's ongoing expansion of PA 6.6 polymer production in Freiburg, Germany, which is nearing completion. Together, these investments reinforce the company's position as a market leader in the sector.

"With the integration of HMD production in Chalampéand expanded polymerization capabilities in Freiburg, we are well-equipped to ensure a reliable supply of premium-quality products to our customers."

The Chalampésite benefits from its strategic location in the Alsace region and close integration with adiponitrile (ADN) feedstock, supporting efficient HMD production. In addition to manufacturing facilities, the site also houses advanced R&D infrastructure dedicated to PA 6.6 development.

Hexamethylenediamine is a key intermediate used in producing PA 6.6 polymers and raw materials for coatings. These products are widely utilized in the automotive sector and in the manufacture of high-performance fibers.
