China styrene trade shifts to net exports: Jan-Jul 2025 vs 2024
Since 2019, the integration of styrene units into domestic refining–chemical complexes has driven a rapid capacity buildout in China. As new capacity came onstream, imports have plunged, with import dependence projected to drop from 28.4% in 2019 to just 1.5% in 2025. This year is set to mark China's first full year as a net styrene exporter, underscoring a structural shift in trade flows.
China's styrene trade shifted markedly in Jan-Jul 2025. According to China Custons, imports fell to 129 kt, down 24% YoY, reflecting tighter arbitrage and stronger domestic coverage. Exports stayed high at 207 kt, only slightly below last year's 226 kt, with surges in February and April offset by softer flows in June–July.
As a result, China moved from net imports of 57 kt in Jan–Jul 2024 to net exports of 79 kt in Jan-Jul 2025, underscoring a structural pivot toward outbound supply. Export flows were heavily concentrated in South Korea (60%), while Turkey, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands made up another third.
