I. China's cotton yarn imports totaled 119.1kt in Aug

In Aug 2025, China's cotton yarn imports was around 119.1kt, an increase of 24.7kt compared to the previous month, setting a new high for import volume this year. This trend aligns with the typical stocking rhythm of imported yarn ahead of the peak season. From Jan-Aug 2025, China's total import of cotton yarn reached 803kt, still 109kt lower than the same period last year. However, the depreciation of the U.S. dollar is expected to support sustained high import levels in September and October.

In August, China's imports of Vietnamese cotton yarn reached a new high since 2022, totaling 73.5kt, accounting for 61.71% of all cotton yarn imports. Pakistani yarn imports climbed to 17.3kt, representing approximately 14.54% of the total. Imports of cotton yarn from Bangladesh slightly decreased to 7.6kt. Indian and Uzbekistani yarn imports showed some recovery in August, with Indian yarn arrivals totaling 5.4kt and Uzbekistani yarn increasing to 1.3kt. As the new cotton arrival season approaches, Chinese market buying interest for Uzbekistani yarn has slightly rebounded. Currently, a significant portion of Uzbekistani yarn is imported through the Kashgar port in Xinjiang, primarily supplying weaving mills within the region.

In Aug, carded single yarn below 8s accounted for over one-quarter of total imports for the first time, reaching 30.6kt. Carded single yarn 8-25s represented 50.4% of imports, totaling 60kt, with both categories showing month-on-month growth compared to July. Against the backdrop of price reductions in overseas markets, particularly for Vietnamese yarn, imports of conventional cotton yarn 32s demonstrated enhanced cost advantages in August. Specifically, imports of carded count yarn 30.4-46.6s increased to 7,807 tons, while cleared volumes of combed cotton yarn 30.4-46.6s also reached a significant level of 6,038 tons.

From January to Aug 2025, cumulative imports of blended cotton yarns reached 105.7kt. Vietnamese blended cotton yarn continues to account for a significant share of imports, with a total of 10.3kt imported in August. Offers for Vietnamese blended yarn remain stable. Against the trend of a depreciating US dollar, the import cost of blended yarn made from US and Brazilian cotton has become relatively close to the sales prices of domestic Chinese yarn mills.
